STAPELIA
(Starfish flower. Carrion flower)

Small, four-sided, leafless stems of green or tinged with purple. Natives of South African deserts. The flowers are more curious than beautiful, and are tainted with a charnel house odor. The leaves are represented by scales or rubbery spines. One or two plants are interesting in the window garden but an extensive collection is usually restricted to specialists. Stapelias may be plunged in the garden during the hot months. Choose the sunniest spot and these immigrants will flower for you almost all summer. Ample sun and Potting Mixture 6.

Stapelia gigangea {short description of image} Stems about io inches high. The hairy flowers are a foot across, of purple and brown, and lined with red.
Stapelia hirsuia Stems 6 inches in height. The ma roon flowers are fringed with violet hairs.
Stapelia incomparabilis The fringed flowers are a raw beef red.
Stapelia variegata 3-inch flowers of green and greenish yellow, spotted with purple-brown.
