In growing most cacti, Potting Mixture 6 and thorough drainage are recommended, for no cactus will countenance standing water. Cacti come from very and regions, partly and regions, and areas where there is considerable moisture. Therefore the natural habitat of a species influences the matter of watering. This is not as confusing as it sounds, because most of the specimens obtainable today are not collected species, but are raised from seed in greenhouses and are, therefore, less susceptible to varying degrees of moisture than are wild plants.

Several generalizations may be helpful.

1. As a rule, flat-leaved cacti will stand more waiter than the spherical or columnar types.
2. All types require less water during the dormant period than when in active growth. When the weather has become definitely cold, reduce watering.
3. Never wet the top structure of a cactus, and never use very cold water.
4. When in doubt about watering a cactus-don't water it.
5. Cacti resent pampering. They often thrive better under neglect than when too carefully tended.
